dati

Dati
Sam Concepcion and Tippy Dos Santos

Ohh ooooooooooooooooooohh

At sabay ring gigising alas kwatro y medya

At pawang magkakalaban pag nagtataya-tayaan

shiela marie pineda

the adamson lady falcons lost to ateneo lady eagles last saturday. great game for alyssa valdez and the lady eagles who will face the NU bulldogs this wednesday (nu has twice-to-beat advantage). while i’m also a big fan of the best scorer and attacker alyssa valdez and the ateneo team, i wanted adamson to win this game to see bang pineda once more before she hangs up her adamson number 1 jersey. she’s graduating this year and we’ll only see her if she suits up in one of the teams in the semi-professional league, philippine super liga.

since i first saw the older adamson team with janet serafica, rissa jane laguilles placed runner up to feu, i have been following this team. angela benting took over as the captain and passed the torch to pau soriano last year, who steered the lady falcons to a third place finish before graduating. shiela mariepineda, or bang, then took over the reins. the high-flying bang topped the scoring chart in early february before valdez took it away solidly.

every weekend, i would cheer for the adamson lady falcons (even against my UP naming mahal team) and would feel bad if they lost a game... similar to that bad feeling when rafael nadal loses. they lost badly to higher ranked teams such as dlsu and nu and suffered surprising losses to feu and ust. they usually start on the losing side before turning things around to win close matches such as their first match against UP and the winner-take-all match versus feu. adamson doesn’t have physically gifted players like dindin santiago or mika reyes. ok, they’re not the best team in uaap but i still like watching the adamson lady falcons! apart from their heart and great floor defense, the main reason is bang pineda.

according to some trivia from commentators such as boom gonzales, noreen go, mozzy ravena, bang pineda was recruited in the team and was groomed to be a libero since she’s a very good digger. until the coaching staff saw that she could be a great open hitter. she’s only 5’4, short in volleyball player standards, but bang’s high leaps and high percentage attacks made her a true weapon for the team. and she is (or was as she already played her last game). she was the best server last year and one of the consistent diggers in the league. as mentioned, she is second to valdez in scoring, contributing not only on attacks but also on blocking, aces and floor defence. a true all-around player and one who will be sorely missed in the league.

#PinedaTime once more sana.

Gavroche

i thought one or two entries on les miserables are already enough. but no. i just have to post another one. i have to have another one on gavroche.

Gavroche is "one of the most appealing and tender characters in fiction", who, despite his relatively small role in the novel, "brings a breath of happiness and humanity a love of life, wit, goodness, and courage in the face of adversity. His purity of spirit is strengthened rather than diminished by poverty, homelessness, and injustice." Where other characters are hardened by experience, Gavroche lives by his wits and shows kindness to everyone he encounters. In his view, as Javert embodies rigor and order, Gavroche represents the unruly, eccentric, and imaginative. - Mario Vargas Llosa

suddenly

#SongOfTheDay #HappyWednesday

"Suddenly"
(performed by Hugh Jackman)

Suddenly I see
Suddenly it starts
Can two anxious hearts beat as one?
Yesterday I was alone
Today you walk beside me
Something still unclear
Something not yet here has begun.

Suddenly the world
Seems a different place
Somehow full of grace and delight.
How was I to know that so much hope was held inside me?
What has passed is gone
Now we journey on through the night

How was I to know at last that happiness can come so fast?
Trusting me the way you do
I’m so afraid of failing you
Just a child who cannot know that danger follows where I go
There are shadows everywhere
And memories I cannot share

Nevermore alone
Nevermore apart
You have warmed my heart like the sun.
You have brought the gift of life
And love so long denied me.

Suddenly I see
What I could not see
Something suddenly
Has begun.

whitewater

november this year.
once more.

let it go

#SongOfTheDay #HappyFriday

Let It Go

The snow glows white on the mountain tonight
Not a footprint to be seen
A kingdom of isolation,
And it looks like I’m the Queen.

The wind is howling
Like this swirling storm inside
Couldn’t keep it in,

Heaven knows I tried

Don’t let them in, don’t let them see
Be the good girl you always have to be
Conceal, don’t feel, don’t let them know

Well, now they know

Let it go, let it go
Can’t hold it back anymore
Let it go, let it go
Turn away and slam the door

I don’t care
What they’re going to say
Let the storm rage on,
The cold never bothered me anyway

It’s funny how some distance
Makes everything seem small
And the fears that once controlled me
Can’t get to me at all

It’s time to see what I can do
To test the limits and break through
No right, no wrong, no rules for me
I’m free

Let it go, let it go
I am one with the wind and sky
Let it go, let it go
You’ll never see me cry

Here I stand
And here

I'll stay
Let the storm rage on

My power flurries through the air into the ground
My soul is spiraling in frozen fractals all around
And one thought crystallizes like an icy blast
I’m never going back, the past is in the past

Let it go, let it go
And I'll rise like the break of dawn
Let it go, let it go
That perfect girl is gone

Here I stand
In the light of day
Let the storm rage on,
The cold never bothered me anyway

come on eileen

#SongOfTheDay #HappyMonday

(Come On Eileen)
(Come On Eileen)

Poor old Johnny Ray
Sounded sad upon the radio
But he moved a million hearts in mono
Our mothers cried
Sang along
Who'd blame them
You've grown, so grown
Now I must say more than ever
(Come On Eileen)
Too-ra-loo-ra, too-ra-loo-rye, aye
And we can sing just like our fathers

Come on Eileen
Oh, I swear what he means (what he means)
At this moment you mean everything
You in that dress
My thoughts I confess
Verge on dirty
Oh, come on Eileen

(Come On Eileen)

These people round here
Wear beaten down eyes sunk
In smoke dried faces
They're so resigned to what their fate is
But not us (no not ever)
But not us (not ever)
We are far too young and clever
(Remember)
Too-ra-loo-ra, too-ra-loo-rye, aye
And you'll hum this tune forever

Come on Eileen
Oh, I swear what he means
Aah, come on let's
Take off everything
That pretty red dress
Eileen (tell him yes)
Aah, come on let's
Aah, come on Eileen

That pretty red dress
Eileen (tell him yes)
Aah, come on let's
Aah, come on Eileen

Come on Eileen, too-rye-aye
Come on Eileen, too-rye-aye
Now you're full grown
Now you have shown
Oh, Eileen

Say, come on Eileen
These things they are real and I know
How you feel
Now I must say more than ever
Things round here have changed
I say, too-ra-loo-ra, too-ra-loo-rye-aye

Come on Eileen
Oh, I swear (what he means)
At this moment, you mean everything
You in that dress, my thoughts I confess
Which are dirty
Aah, come on Eileen

Aah, come on Eileen
Oh, I swear (what he means)
At this moment, you mean everything
You in that dress, my thoughts I confess
Well, they're dirty
Come on Eileen

Come on Eileen...

6 years

tsotsi

tsotsi won the oscar for best foreign language film in 2006. it definitely packed a serious punch and deserved all the awards it won. tsotsi is the name of its central character who is a criminal teenager. in one of his unlawful escapades, tsotsi hijacked a car and fatally shoots the woman driver. on his way to dispose of his loot, he finds a baby on the back seat, brings the baby home and soon bonded with him. he chose miriam, a young mother to help him take care of the baby. the presence of the baby transformed his behavior, from that of a street hooligan to a caring, somewhat a foster father to the baby.

one may find tsotsi another sampling of poverty porn ala pinoy indies since it highlighted soweto’s (johannesburg’s biggest slum) squalor and the city’s underbelly. but what is effective in this one is that the setting only provided a backdrop to a truly compelling story – human beings no matter how big a predator they’ve become, they still have that loving side to them and are capable of caring for another human being. tsotsi may have chosen a life of crime due to his life experiences (his mother died of AIDS and his father was cruel to him), the infant set off a change in his demeanor and he discovered that tender side of him.

it may be a bit hard to watch because of the in-your-face violence. but its realist take didn’t feel contrived at all and may be due to the director’s choice to tap non-actors to tell the story. presley chweneyagae as tsotsi was phenomenal, as was the mathusi magano as boston and terry pheto as miriam. its accompanying music also worked well in intensifying the “low life” urban criminal mood of the film.

intense and powerful, tsotsi is a must-watch.

the kite runner

friendship beyond inequalities, honor and family – these are the central themes of these beautiful, poignant film, the kite runner. adapted from khaled hosseini’s book, the kite runner tells the story of amir, a well-off boy living in kabul’s wazir akbar khan district. set against the backdrop of afghanistan’s turbulent recent history, amir had to live with his guilt stemming from abandoning his friend and the son of his father’s servant, hassan.

in one of their local kite-flying competitions, hassan promised to give amir the winning kite. he caught the kite but a bunch of bullies wanted it for themselves. hassan was beaten up and was sexually assaulted. amir, who saw his friend being assaulted abandoned his friend and even called hassan a coward. national events since played out with the monarchy falling and the soviet union invading the country, amir and his father sought refuge in pakistan and eventually in the US. hassan and his family did not have that luxury and stayed behind in afghanistan and experienced the times when the taliban took over the country.

as critics put it, the kite runner captures the audience’s imagination. it opened my eyes to the glory of afghanistan as a nation and how foreign power destroyed its sovereignty and how fanatic take on religion wipe out familial blueprint and heritage. the special joy of friendship, fun during someone’s youth, loyalty, pain and remorse were all interwoven in this tale. this line from hassan especially resonated with me, “if you tell me to eat dirt, i will. but i know you won't ask me to.”

if there was one criticism against the kite runner, it would have been the fast-forwarded take on the movie’s vital final moments. while it did put a lot of time in laying the background of the story and what happened to amir when he moved to the US, the solution to the conflict felt rushed. maybe because when amir’s moment to stand up for sohrab came, the movie was already running at over 2 hours. however, the ending still provided a good atmosphere by saying that it’s never too late to make amends for missteps committed in the past. it is one inspiring film that everyone should see.
