lady falcons

this sunday was all about UAAP women’s volleyball.

UP of course is already out of contention with a 1-11 record but the (dead) match with UE this afternoon was more to prove that our win over the lady warriors in the season’s first round was no fluke. UE actually started well, winning the first two sets. leuseht dawis and her gang made it difficult for the lady maroons to properly set up offence. but in the third set, the lady maroons suddenly found their groove, winning it in convincing fashion while also narrowly beating UE in the fourth set, thanks to katherine bersola, nicole tiamzon and jaye ong. in the fifth set, both squads started well until UP had that magic margin of four points. UE rallied a bit late in the set but UP sealed it with tiamzon’s down the line hit. two wins for UP this seaon… i don’t think they would beat adamson in their next game.
next game was the more important one. an adamson win would solidify their position in the final four, as well as giving them a chance to overtake ateneo in the rankings. an FEU win would put them at 7-5 card, resulting to a three-way tie (with adamson and UST). i really thought that FEU will beat adamson due to the lady tamaraws’ might in the first set. but adamson fought back and won the second set. lady tams took the third set when marie toni basas, rosemarie vargas and wenneth eulalio combined to score a lot of attack points. the fourth set went to the lady falcons, from a combo of good attack-and-defend points from sheila marie pineda, mayette zapanta and pau soriano. the fifth set almost went by quickly as adamson piled up points but FEU got their offensive groove again and actually tied the game at 12-12. the next point went to FEU and looked like they will shut adamson out of the game. at 12-13, pineda produced that lucky offspeed hit which was not anticipated by vargas. scrappy and defensive-minded, the well-conditioned adamson squad sealed it with that zapanta spike that got thru FEU blockers. adamson is now at 8-4 and will play NU and UP in their following games.

too bad, i won’t see the live proceedings on wednesday but there’s always balls channel’s replay around 10 pm the same day. i’m excited to see who’s gonna fill that number 4 spot (hoping that it’ll be UST) and on to the final four session!
