bowling

KAPAG PINANGANAK KANG PANGIT
HUWAG KA NANG MASUNGIT
KAPAG IKA’Y LAGING MASUNGIT
LALO KANG PAPANGIT
HINDI BAGAY MAGMASUNGIT ANG PANGIT

corruption

declining corruption in the philippines = good news.

Why Graft Is Declining In The Notoriously Corrupt Philippines

Corruption in the Philippines has shot as high as $94 million per case. It has snared people as senior as former presidents Joseph Estrada and Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. The Philippines is no clean country. But nine graft cases on a top-10 list published last year by local news website rappler.com broke out before 2010. Large-scale corruption is declining now in the Philippines, a boost to the Southeast Asian country stifled partly by foreign investor fears of political instability and hidden costs of doing business.

“I’d agree that corruption has come down,” says Rahul Bajoria, a regional economist with Barclays in Singapore. “Systems and processes have become more transparent, and it’s largely reflected in government projects.”

The Philippines may attract more foreign-run factories as graft declines. (This plant processes
sugar cane in Batangas province near Manila. It’s tempting to elevate President Benigno Aquino III,
since he took office in 2010 on a platform to cut corruption in a country fatigued by it.
Corruption has “decreased dramatically” because of Aquino’s tighter rules on transparency and
government transactions, says Benedict Uy, a Philippine trade representative based now in Taipei.
The decline in dirty deals began after he took office, analysts in Manila say.

Not to discredit Aquino, but more credit goes to social media. The democratic country is rich in competing interests and free speech. Now with the surge in smartphone cameras and mobile devices , an opponent who sees someone in office take money or drive a bling-y new car can send a tweet or post the dirt to Facebook. “Right now everyone in government and outside government is monitoring each other,” Manila-based Banco de Oro UniBank chief market strategist Jonathan Ravelas says.

“Social media are there to ring the bells, so people try to be very careful in how they do things.” Graft remains, he says, but “it has gone down significantly.”

The government itself hardly rules out the role of media. “Media are doing a very good job or a more aggressive job in exposing all these things,” Uy says. “Now the politicians, all their dirty laundry is exposed, so everyone will know.”

The highest-stakes case to reach the country’s anti-graft court was filed in 2001 against Estrada after he was forced out of office.  He received a presidential pardon in 2007 for crimes related to a secret bank account and accepting lottery proceeds, but the court is still chasing him for money it says he owes the government. The country’s chief corruption case since 2010 involves three senators charged with graft and plunder from the Disbursement Acceleration Program, a 4-year-old government stimulus fund. Total amounts taken illegally could reach $40 million if all three are convicted, according to local media.

But most of what remains is the small stuff, matters of little social media interest such as donating a cake or suckling pig to helpful local officials, or bribes of a few hundred Philippine pesos (one peso equals $0.02) to agencies that fast-track building permits.

The overall decline should inspire foreign investors as they weigh Manila against cities in India for call centers or consider the government’s recently stepped-up campaign to lure multinational factory projects that normally land in China and Vietnam. The Philippines is actively recruiting factory investment to create jobs, easing chronic poverty. Foreign direct investment rose from $3.92 billion to $6.22 billion in 2013, government statistics show.

“What we have seen is that it hasn’t happened for this administration, the large-scale corruption,” says Jose Mari Lacson, head of research at Campos Lanuza & Co., a Manila stock brokerage. “The foreign investors are happy. It’s much cheaper.”

baraha

Minalungao

one of my ultimate travel goals is to visit all 81 provinces in the country. ala-landbank (the only bank that has a branch in all 81), it would really be great to see all 81 diverse, equally exciting provinces that make up this archipelago. this is why this year, i aim to add more to my previously 33 visited provinces. my 34th was of course the land of the howling winds, catanduanes, where i had fun in january. the following months were another holiday (plus work) in familiar yet still exciting places such as cavite (tagaytay city), palawan (el nido), aklan (boracay) and quezon (lucban and cagbalete in mauban).

independence day weekend, long weekend. still undecided on where to go, i slept thru friday but finally fixed my sights on nueva ecija… the only other (apart from baler) central luzon province i haven't been to. of course, we've passed thru this province on our way to banaue but never really seen it. i've seen a lot of blogs talking about this national park in general tinio (papaya) called minalungao. so i swiftly prepared my stuff and pushed for an early morning bus trip to gapan, nueva ecija. the five star bus left pasay terminal at 6 am, had a quick stopover in san miguel, bulacan and before 8:30 am, i was already in bucana, gapan.

right after alighting in bucana, i was greeted by manong rene and told him that i wanted to go to minalungao and asked how much would the fare be. he said that it's about php 1,000 for the entire trip but since i did my research, i told him that 1k is too much and instructed him to just bring me to papaya town center where i'll get another trike to bring me to the national park. he then said, how about php 600 for the entire trip. did some addition and agreed to it. after all, the fare going to papaya is 150 one way and from papaya to minalungao, trikes charge 250-300 roundtrip. from gapan, we passed by penaranda and reached general tinio. the trip was almost 45 minutes, traversing unpaved roads but generally a safe one. i paid 60 pesos for the park entrance and trike parking and manong rene got me albert, my 10-year old would-be tour guide.

fixed my stuff and off we started with my minalungao adventure. albert first brought me to the park's caves and he flashlighted the nicest stalagmites and stalactites, most of which actually glimmer. the aging in me felt that i was not ready for the stretching brought about by this quick cave experience but really enjoyed it. we then glided along the rock formations once again. stopped here and there for photos. i didn't dip in penaranda river yet as albert said that we'll be going to the holy cross on the other side. we crossed the river via a bamboo raft (10 pesos) and started on "a 1000 step journey up the hill". once again, the lack of physical activity caught up with me… we were nowhere near the halfway mark but i felt like giving up. steps/stairs and i are really not friends! i asked albert what i will see up there and got a naïve response about "a cross and a triumph". soldiered on and stopped at the halfway mark where two ladies were chatting with a group of tourists. after a quick rest, steps and steps once again. another 3-4 flights according to the young tourist guide. the late morning heat of course made the trek even more difficult. finally, we reached the summit where a cross was erected and encased in glass panels. big gulp of water, photos and lied down for a needed break. we stayed there for about 20 minutes and went back to the river's edge.

lunchtime. the only restaurant in the park was serving chicken adobo, pancit malabon, arroz caldo and spaghetti. i had lunch with both albert and manong rene. after having our fill, walked around the park, glided once again along the side of remarkable limestone formation. cooled down by finally dipping and swimming in the river's shallow area. i stayed there for another 2-3 hours before asking manong rene to bring me back to bucana heading to cabanatuan city. in a little over 30 minutes, i was already exploring the biggest city in nueva ecija. nothing really great to see but it was still good to be there for the first time. i didn't feel unsafe walking around the city although finding yourself in sm megacenter was a letdown.

so there was my 35th province – nueva ecija! another 3-4 and I'm halfway through my goal. till the next adventure.

urban

interview

6 Interview Questions You Must Ask if You Want to Hire the Best People

Toss the canned interview questions and try these instead.

By Thomas Koulopoulos, Founder, Delphi Group

There's no lack of sources for canned interview questions. A quick Google search on the phrase interview questions turns up about 20 million hits! Good luck with that.

In 30 years of interviewing people for roles in fast-paced startup cultures, I've come to realize that the vast majority of standard interview questions are useless. Yes, I know that sounds harsh, but the reality is that most interviewing guidelines have been developed for larger companies that have square holes they need to fill with square pegs.
If you wanted cookie cutter employees, you'd be running a cookie cutter business, and you're not doing that--right?
Conformance, standardized qualifications, and a general lack of disruptive personality tend to work best for large companies. Not so for entrepreneurial ventures, where people need to grow with the organization, find opportunities on their own, and constantly question conventional wisdom. Besides, any reasonably smart person has rehearsed the answers to the standard roster of interview questions. "What's your greatest weakness?" "I work too hard and expect excellence from those I work with." Yeah, that's what I wanted to hear--you're hired! Going through this dance is just plain lazy. If you wanted cookie cutter employees, you'd be running a cookie cutter business, and you're not doing that--right?

The most important thing I want to understand when hiring people is what drives them. Sure, they need to have a basic sense of the industry, the business model, and the market, but smart people can quickly ramp up. The key in hiring the best people is to look for foundational traits that speak to their sense of purpose, what drives them to achieve, how they deal with failure and success, how they think, and why they do what they do. Once you get close to these, you'll know if someone is right for your organization.

So here are a few of the questions that I ask and why I ask them. My experience is that exceptional people like to be challenged with questions that go deeper, allowing them to reveal their values and strengths. Keep in mind that there are no pat answers to any of these. The intent is to see a person for who he or she is; that's a great way to set the groundwork for the potential of an authentic long-term relationship.
  1. Are you driven by the determination to succeed or the fear of failure?
There is no right answer to this question. What I'm looking for is what motivates this person to work hard. I do not judge ambition; it comes in many forms. Notice, by the way, that I'm asking if fear of failure "drives" him or her, not "paralyzes." See the next question for more on that.
  1. Why are you successful?
Successful people think a great deal about what they are doing and why. They always have a definitive and purposeful answer to why they have been successful. They also have a deep need for success that always eclipses their fears.
  1. If today were your last day on earth, what would you most regret not having accomplished?
Regrets are horrible bedfellows. I've found that people who live with a keen awareness of what they need to accomplish are driven to be creative and resourceful; yes, they're exactly who I want on my team. By the way, one of my favorite responses to this question was from a candidate who was also a private pilot: "Can you give me an approximate altitude above the Earth?"
  1. How is who you are now consistent or inconsistent with the person you were at 12 years old?
To know a person, you need to know his or her journey. This single question may tell you more about the person you're talking to than just about anything else you could ask. Don't laugh this one off. Stick with it, and dig deep. It can take a bit of time, but it's worth it.
  1. Name someone who is alive today, whom I would know, and whom you consider to be exceptionally intelligent. How would you rank your intelligence against this person's?
This is a two-part question, and you need to wait for the first answer before proceeding with the second question. The objective is simple; I want to know whom the person admires and how the person compares him- or herself to that person. This will tell you a great deal about how someone measures intelligence and values him- or herself.
  1. When are you happiest?
The stuff that makes us happiest is what we gravitate to. This is a question you may need to probe a bit by tying it back to specific examples. Withhold judgment. It's easy to judge someone because what makes the person happy is not what makes you happy. What matters is that you get an answer that you feel is authentic, in keeping with the culture of your organization, and which will be fueled by the work the person would be doing.

A final caveat to all of this: Finding the sorts of people who have a deep sense of purpose and a drive to succeed also means managing them, but that's the deal you signed up for. Don't be deterred by people who show strength, push back, and show some spine--and don't be afraid to push back just as hard. If you want a crew of high achievers who can chart a course to growth and innovation, then you also need to be ready to captain that ship.

scarlet

masaya ang pakiramdam
damang ika'y buhay
sabi ni scarlet johansson.

damang-dama mo nga
buhay na buhay
may tuwang dulot.

di masyado dati
tanguan at ngitian
kaunting tawana't hagikgikan.

pero nitong nakalipas
dumalas nang dumalas
parang mas malapit.

palagian ang huntahan
mas maraming usapan
dumarami ang tagpo.

mas maraming tawanan
may seryosong usapan
silang dalawa lang.

nagpasadulo pa nga
iisang kahon ginalawan
o anong tuwa.

mukhang may klik
gusto sanang kumlik
huwag na lang.

pero tuloy-tuloy ito
kaiga-igayang mga tagpo
masayang mga sandali.

tumitindi na yata
lalo pang umiigting
mukhang pahulog na.

hahahaha ang bunghalit
wala kasing magaganap
hanggang doon lang.

lugod na lugod
libang na libang
yun ang mahalaga.

magpapakaaliw at magpapakasaya
ikasisiya at itatarhasa
habang naririyan pa.

di kasi palagi
minsan lang ito
tagal nang nakaraan.

kaya nga maksimahin
i-enjoy bawat sandali
ngiti at kiligkig.

kain nang kain
tamis kung tamis
tam-es kung tam-es.

lamukos kung lamukos
kras kung kras

loha prasat

another solo sojourn in my favorite bangkok temple - wat rachanadda's loha prasat!
